Clinical Specialists
Judy Petersen, RN, MN, AOCN Director of Clinical Development and Clinical Specialist, Oncology, NexCura Ms. Petersen brings an exceptional breadth of oncology knowledge and interest in cancer patient education to the NexCura team. During 23 years in oncology nursing, she provided patient care in chemotherapy, radiation and adjunctive care, marrow transplantation and psychosocial support settings. As clinical specialist, she is responsible for building and maintaining Most recently she was oncology clinical nurse specialist at Northwest Hospital, Seattle, Wash., where she served in various capacities, including inpatient IV team supervisor, and patient care/clinical research coordinator in the Deke Slayton Center for Brain Cancer Studies. In her research work, Ms. Petersen designed a program to support brain cancer patients, collaborating with physicians to assess and initiate appropriate support services for patients and their families, conduct patient education and support groups, as well as coordinate data collection and management for Radiation Therapy Oncology Group studies and other research studies. Ms. Petersen earned her bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Wisconsin in 1977 and earned a master's degree in nursing from the University of Washington in 1982, specializing in oncology. She earned her certification in oncology nursing (OCN) in 1986 and obtained advanced certification (AOCN) in 1998. In 2000, she received the Oncology Nursing Society Foundation/Aventis New Investigators Research Grant. A past member of executive committee for the Washington Division of the American Cancer Society, Ms. Petersen remains active in the cancer care community as a member of the Oncology Nursing Society Puget Sound chapter, and the Oncology Nursing Society, the Washington state Nurses Associations and the American Nurses Association. Beverly J. Davis, RN, MSN, AOCN Clinical Specialist, Oncology, NexCura Ms. Davis brings to Nexcura a range of expertise, having cared for cancer patients for 30 years from initial diagnosis to survivorship and terminal care. Having obtained her bachelors in nursing degree from Indiana University, she began her career as a staff nurse in pediatric intensive care. She soon transferred to and became an oncology nurse specialist and within three years advanced to oncology nurse clinician at Indiana University where her work included implementing and monitoring phase II and III clinical research trials. At the same time she obtained her masters of nursing degree and moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1983, where she worked for 10 years as an oncology clinical nurse specialist at the University of Washington. She worked with nursing and physician colleagues to maintain high standards of oncology care in a dynamic setting often involving clinical trials. Her role included clinical and classroom teaching, role-modeling, patient and family education, incorporating new research results into clinical practice, and working with patient support groups. During this time, she was active in the oncology community, giving many presentations on cancer care, control of side effects, and pain control. In 1993, Ms. Davis took on responsibility as Hospice Clinical Manager for a home health agency where she developed a new hospice program, obtained state licensure, and Medicare accreditation. Prior to joining NexCura, Ms. Davis served in a collaborative practice with medical oncologists. She worked with patients with all types of cancer and taught them about their cancers and their treatments, and worked with them during treatment to control side effects and complications. Working with patients and their families over a period of time and coming to know them, Ms. Davis regards as a truly meaningful part of her career. Ms. Davis has been a member of the Oncology Nursing Society since 1976 and has served as a core member of its Clinical Practice Committee. She is a past president of the Puget Sound Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society. In 1999 she completed education for certification as an advanced oncology nurse. Jon David Smith, RN Clinical Specialist, Oncology, NexCura As a clinical nurse coordinator for the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, Mr. Smith brings 25 years experience in oncology nursing to the NexCura team. At the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance he works daily with medical oncologists specializing in treatment of patients with melanoma and kidney cancer in an oncology outpatient clinic environment. He is responsible for initiating patient care planning for both chemotherapy and biological therapy regimens. He previously served as outpatient primary nurse for the University of Washington Cancer Center working in partnership with three medical oncologists specializing in treatment of patients with melanoma, kidney, prostate, and GI cancer in an outpatient setting. Since earning his bachelor of science degree from the University of Washington in 1980, Mr. Smith has served cancer patients in all phases of treatment from initial diagnosis to hospital inpatient and outpatient oncology care. His treatment experience includes research treatment protocols involving chemotherapy, hormonal, biologic, monoclonal therapies, and bone marrow and stem cell transplant. Sue Ellen Loebach, RN, MN, OCN Clinical Specialist, Oncology, NexCura Over the past 29 years, Ms. Loebach has become a recognized expert in oncology nursing care having served adult and pediatric cancer patients in research, medical center and physician practice settings. She has extensive experience in the administration of chemotherapy, side effects management for chemotherapy and radiation therapy, research protocol adherence, nursing training and patient education. In her current position as an oncology nurse for Swedish Cancer Institute in Seattle, she provides outpatient nursing care, assessment, triage and education in eight different physician based practices, as well as, the chemotherapy and radiation units. Prior to this she worked for the University of Washington Cancer Center in the chemotherapy infusion unit, working with advanced chemotherapy and radiation delivery. For six years, Ms. Loebach worked within clinical research protocols in the renowned marrow transplant unit of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, where she cared for patients in all phases of marrow and stem cell transplantation from intensive care to ambulatory and outpatient care management. She also has held positions monitoring research protocol adherence for a clinical trials data monitoring company, and taught college nursing courses. Ms. Loebach graduated with her bachelor of nursing degree from St. Louis University, and earned a masters in nursing with a focus on pathophysiology, oncology and hematology from the University of Washington. She is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society and has been recognized for her work with both the Sigma Theta Tau National Nursing Honorary and the Psi Chi National Psychology Honorary. She has received a Leadership Award from the Amercian Cancer Society for involvement with Camp Goodtimes, a camp for children with cancer and their siblings. Jormain Cady ARNP, MS, AOCN Clinical Specialist, Oncology, NexCura Jormain Cady is a nurse practitioner in radiation oncology at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Wash. She also has served as a pain management clinical nurse specialist and anesthesia clinical research coordinator, and has extensive experience in nursing care of head, neck and throat cancer patients. She is primarily responsible for assessment and management of patients actively undergoing radiation therapy, and also participates in post-treatment follow up care. With 13 years oncology nursing experience, Ms. Cady has developed expertise in radiation oncology nursing and pain management. Her published works include articles and a book chapter on the topics of head and neck cancers and management of treatment effects, pain management, and cancer diagnosis and staging. She also serves as a reviewer for the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing and the Journal of Palliative Care. Additionally, she has presented for the Puget Sound Oncology Nursing Society and Washington State Medical Oncologists Society on cancer care issues. Ms. Cady earned a BSN from the University of Washington in 1992, followed by a masters of science from the University of California at San Francisco in 1996, specializing in adult primary care and oncology nursing. She has also earned certification in advanced practice oncology nursing. She currently serves as president of the Puget Sound Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society and is an active member of the national Oncology Nursing Society and the ONS Nurse Practitioner Special Interest Group. She also maintains membership with the Association of Pain Management Nurses, and the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology. Martha Clay, MSN, ARNP Clinical Specialist, Oncology, NexCura Martha Clay's 22-year nursing career spans the healthcare spectrum from emergency, to respiratory medicine, thoracic surgery, nursing training, and risk assessment and surveillance. Having completed her bachelor of science degree in 1983 and a master of science in nursing in 1989, Ms. Clay is a nurse practitioner currently licensed to practice in Washington state. Over the past five years, Ms. Clay has served as a breast specialist at the Polyclinic in Seattle and Overlake Medical Center in Bellevue, Wash. She currently is nurse practitioner at the Comprehensive Breast Center of the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle. Prior to that, Ms. Clay served as nurse practitioner in vascular, chest, and general surgery at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, New York, NY. She implemented and facilitated efficient use of resources and services, diagnosis, patient education, and discharge planning that resulted in shortened hospital stays in the vascular, breast and general surgery clinics. As nurse practitioner for a respiratory disease specialty clinic in New York, she set dosing regimens for the practice's allergy regimens, and initiated home management plans for pediatric and adult allergy and asthma patients. She also managed all acute reactions to allergy therapy during office hours. Ms. Clay has also served one year in Suzhou, China, where she taught English to Chinese nursing students. Joseph D. Tariman, RN, APN, ARPN-BC, OCN Staff nurse, Hematology-Oncology Unit at Evergreen Medical Center, Kirkland, Wash.; Predoctoral Research Fellow, Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems School of Nursing, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington Joseph Tariman is a noted nurse practitioner, author, educator, and lecturer. He is currently a PhD candidate at University of Washington where he received his predoctoral research fellowships in the Biobehavioral Nursing Research Program funded by the NINR’s Ruth L. Kirschstein National Service Award and the Achievement Rewards for College Scientists fellowship. Mr. Tariman has 17 years experience of combined nursing practice, education and research. He received his BSN (cum laude) from University of the Visayas, Master of Arts in Nursing from Cebu Doctor’s University in the Philippines, and post-Master’s certification in Adult Health at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL. Mr. Tariman has written over 30 published articles and abstracts and two book chapters on multiple myeloma. His work in the area of multiple myeloma has been cited in numerous peer-review journals including Oncology Nursing Forum and Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing, for which he is a member of the editorial review board. He also serves as contributing editor for ONS Connect and a column writer for Advance for Nurse Practitioners on men’s health issues. Angela Hall ARNP-BC, GNP-BC, MSN Clinical Specialist, Oncology, NexCura Angela Hall has 20 years of experience as an oncology nurse in the fields of hematological malignancies, solid tumor and bone marrow transplant most recently as the ARNP with the lymphoma group at the University of Washington and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. She has served in various roles over the years including as a case manager coordinating and delivering care through symptom management, patient education on the side effects of chemotherapy, hospice referrals, and assisting patients navigating insurance-related issues. Throughout her career she has also served as head nurse in a medical-orthopedic unit and also specialized in geriatric care. A graduate of the Nursing program at San Jose State University, Mrs. Hall has earned a Master's degree in Nursing from San Jose State, and completed a post master's advanced registered nurse practitioner certificate in adult and gerontology from Seattle Pacific University. She was awarded the John A. Hartford foundation and Virginia Mason Medical Center post-master's Nurse practitioner scholarship, and has been the co-editor of the Puget Sound Oncology Nurse Society Quarterly 2002-2004 and was honored with the Editor Award by the Oncology Nurse society, for the "PSONS Quarterly." |
