Clinical Specialists

NexCura's clinical specialists, who are responsible for building the individual NexProfiler treatment option tools, have been carefully chosen as recognized experts and leaders in their respective fields. At NexCura, the clinical specialists' primary responsibilities are to collaborate with the Medical Editorial Board to select the significant research studies to create the database for each NexProfiler tool and then develop the algorithms used to match individual patient data to the database. They develop and design the standard reports generated by the software -- such as outcome, staging, and treatment summary reports. They continually check each NexProfiler tool for accuracy as well as update it as new research changes treatment options.
Judy Petersen, RN, MN, AOCN Director of Clinical Development and Clinical Specialist, Oncology, NexCura, a Thomson business
Ms. Petersen brings an exceptional breadth of oncology knowledge and interest in cancer patient education to the NexCura team. During 23 years in oncology nursing, she provided patient care in chemotherapy, radiation and adjunctive care, marrow transplantation and psychosocial support settings. As clinical specialist, she is responsible for building and maintaining for uterine, small cell lung cancers, lymphoma and multiple myeloma.
Most recently she was oncology clinical nurse specialist at Northwest Hospital, Seattle, Wash., where she served in various capacities, including inpatient IV team supervisor, and patient care/clinical research coordinator in the Deke Slayton Center for Brain Cancer Studies.
In her research work, Ms. Petersen designed a program to support brain cancer patients, collaborating with physicians to assess and initiate appropriate support services for patients and their families, conduct patient education and support groups, as well as coordinate data collection and management for Radiation Therapy Oncology Group studies and other research studies.
Ms. Petersen earned her bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Wisconsin in 1977 and earned a master's degree in nursing from the University of Washington in 1982, specializing in oncology.
She earned her certification in oncology nursing (OCN) in 1986 and obtained advanced certification (AOCN) in 1998. In 2000, she received the Oncology Nursing Society Foundation/Aventis New Investigators Research Grant.
A past member of executive committee for the Washington Division of the American Cancer Society, Ms. Petersen remains active in the cancer care community as a member of the Oncology Nursing Society Puget Sound chapter, and the Oncology Nursing Society, the Washington state Nurses Associations and the American Nurses Association.
Larie Smoyer, MD, MLIS Manager Clinical Development; Women's Health, and Cardiology; NexCura, a Thomson business
Dr. Smoyer joined the NexCura team to pursue her professional interests in patient education and support. Based on her experience in private practice, she saw the opportunity at NexCura as a practical way to deliver better health and treatment information to patients. She recognized that it is ever more important for patients to have access to complementary and reliable information as physicians are facing increasing patient loads and diminishing time for patient consultations. Her goals are to present patients with information that assists them have more effective conversations with their healthcare providers and to help optimize the time that patients spend with their providers.
Dr. Smoyer earned her medical degree from the University of Washington in 1996, where her research interests focused on fetal alcohol syndrome. Following graduation from medical school, she completed an obstetrics and gynecology residency at the University of Minnesota Integrated Residency in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health in 2000. Prior to joining NexCura, Dr. Smoyer worked in a private obstetrics and gynecology practice in Seattle.
To supplement her skills in researching and providing health information and patient education, Dr. Smoyer has obtained a master of library and information science degree from the University of Washington. She holds a professional librarian’s life certificate issued by the Washington State Library.
Dr. Smoyer maintains an active physician and surgeon license in the state of Washington and is a member of the American Heart Association, the Heart Failure Society of America, and the Medical Library Association. Her interests are in women's health, primary care, and cardiology.
Beverly J. Davis, RN, MSN, AOCN Clinical Specialist, Oncology, NexCura, a Thomson business
Ms. Davis brings to Nexcura a range of expertise, having cared for cancer patients for 30 years from initial diagnosis to survivorship and terminal care. Having obtained her bachelors in nursing degree from Indiana University, she began her career as a staff nurse in pediatric intensive care. She soon transferred to and became an oncology nurse specialist and within three years advanced to oncology nurse clinician at Indiana University where her work included implementing and monitoring phase II and III clinical research trials.
At the same time she obtained her masters of nursing degree and moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1983, where she worked for 10 years as an oncology clinical nurse specialist at the University of Washington. She worked with nursing and physician colleagues to maintain high standards of oncology care in a dynamic setting often involving clinical trials. Her role included clinical and classroom teaching, role-modeling, patient and family education, incorporating new research results into clinical practice, and working with patient support groups. During this time, she was active in the oncology community, giving many presentations on cancer care, control of side effects, and pain control.
In 1993, Ms. Davis took on responsibility as Hospice Clinical Manager for a home health agency where she developed a new hospice program, obtained state licensure, and Medicare accreditation. Prior to joining NexCura, Ms. Davis served in a collaborative practice with medical oncologists. She worked with patients with all types of cancer and taught them about their cancers and their treatments, and worked with them during treatment to control side effects and complications. Working with patients and their families over a period of time and coming to know them, Ms. Davis regards as a truly meaningful part of her career.
Ms. Davis has been a member of the Oncology Nursing Society since 1976 and has served as a core member of its Clinical Practice Committee. She is a past president of the Puget Sound Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society. In 1999 she completed education for certification as an advanced oncology nurse.
John Morgan, MD, PS Clinical Specialist, Respiratory, NexCura, a Thomson business
Dr. Morgan retired from private practice as an allergy and immunology specialist in Spokane, Washington, bringing 17 years of experience in patient care, in clinical research, and in the training of other physicians and nurse practitioners, to the development of patient education tools at NexCura. As a resident physician at the University of Washington Hospitals, he gained experience in psychiatric and pediatric care, while training medical students and pursuing both clinical and bench research. His research interests focused on infectious diseases, immunology and protocol development. Prior to beginning his medical career, Dr. Morgan served as a VISTA volunteer and director of nonprofit programs for the developmentally disabled, the mentally ill, and the homeless. He earned a bachelor’s degree with dual majors in political science and history at Stanford University and his doctor of medicine degree at the University of Washington, and he was a post-doctoral fellow in allergy and clinical immunology at the Baylor College of Medicine/ Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas.
Irene J. Karlsen Thompson, RN, MSN, ARNP Clinical Specialist, Oncology, NexCura, a Thomson business; Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, Swedish Medical Center Cancer Institute
With 27 years of oncology nursing experience, Ms. Thompson brings to the NexCura team a wealth of knowledge in the areas of oncology nursing, radiation oncology and hematology in both inpatient and outpatient settings. As a nurse practitioner, she has practiced both in community primary care clinics such as the North Bend and Fall City Family Practice Clinic and comprehensive cancer research centers such as Swedish Medical Center and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
Her experience includes providing primary care to patients undergoing marrow transplantation, developing clinical, educational and resource programs for newly diagnosed patients, developing and teaching a chemotherapy certification course, and overseeing prostate, colorectal, skin and breast cancer screening programs. In addition to advanced registered nurse practitioner with prescriptive authority, Ms. Thompson holds certifications in adult and family practice nursing, oncology nursing, and is a certified breast self-exam instructor for the American Cancer Society.
She is past president of the Puget Sound Oncology Nursing Society and the national Oncology Nursing Society. Ms. Thompson has been awarded a professional nurse traineeship for graduate studies, a research grant from the American Cancer Society of Michigan and has been recognized for her work in music therapy as a nursing intervention for pain control with oncology clients.
Jon David Smith, RN Clinical Specialist, Oncology, NexCura, a Thomson business
As a clinical nurse coordinator for the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, Mr. Smith brings 25 years experience in oncology nursing to the NexCura team. At the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance he works daily with medical oncologists specializing in treatment of patients with melanoma and kidney cancer in an oncology outpatient clinic environment. He is responsible for initiating patient care planning for both chemotherapy and biological therapy regimens.
He previously served as outpatient primary nurse for the University of Washington Cancer Center working in partnership with three medical oncologists specializing in treatment of patients with melanoma, kidney, prostate, and GI cancer in an outpatient setting.
Since earning his bachelor of science degree from the University of Washington in 1980, Mr. Smith has served cancer patients in all phases of treatment from initial diagnosis to hospital inpatient and outpatient oncology care. His treatment experience includes research treatment protocols involving chemotherapy, hormonal, biologic, monoclonal therapies, and bone marrow and stem cell transplant.
Sue Ellen Loebach, RN, MN, OCN Clinical Specialist, Oncology, NexCura, a Thomson business
Over the past 29 years, Ms. Loebach has become a recognized expert in oncology nursing care having served adult and pediatric cancer patients in research, medical center and physician practice settings. She has extensive experience in the administration of chemotherapy, side effects management for chemotherapy and radiation therapy, research protocol adherence, nursing training and patient education.
In her current position as an oncology nurse for Swedish Cancer Institute in Seattle, she provides outpatient nursing care, assessment, triage and education in eight different physician based practices, as well as, the chemotherapy and radiation units. Prior to this she worked for the University of Washington Cancer Center in the chemotherapy infusion unit, working with advanced chemotherapy and radiation delivery.
For six years, Ms. Loebach worked within clinical research protocols in the renowned marrow transplant unit of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, where she cared for patients in all phases of marrow and stem cell transplantation from intensive care to ambulatory and outpatient care management. She also has held positions monitoring research protocol adherence for a clinical trials data monitoring company, and taught college nursing courses.
Ms. Loebach graduated with her bachelor of nursing degree from St. Louis University, and earned a masters in nursing with a focus on pathophysiology, oncology and hematology from the University of Washington. She is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society and has been recognized for her work with both the Sigma Theta Tau National Nursing Honorary and the Psi Chi National Psychology Honorary. She has received a Leadership Award from the Amercian Cancer Society for involvement with Camp Goodtimes, a camp for children with cancer and their siblings.
Ellen Sitton, RN, MSN, RT(T) Clinical Specialist, Oncology, NexCura, a Thomson business
Ellen Sitton is an advanced practice oncology nurse specializing in radiation therapy nursing and education. She recently served as a consultant to the University of Southern California Norris Cancer Hospital Department of Radiation Therapy and the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California.
Ms. Sitton's extensive experience in radiation therapy nursing includes 11 years working in radiation oncology and radiology at the USC Kenneth Norris Jr. Cancer Hospital both as oncology and radiology patient education specialist and as nursing supervisor in radiation oncology and radiology. Prior to that she served 11 years as a radiotherapy nurse and radiation therapy technologist at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. She also served six years in pediatric nursing in the pediatric intensive care unit at Hermann Hospital, Houston, Texas, and the pediatric intensive care at University of Illinois Hospital in Chicago.
Nationally recognized for her expertise in radiation oncology nursing and patient education, Ms. Sitton has served on the Radiation Oncology Special Interest Group Subcommittee of the Oncology Nursing Society, which developed nursing guidelines for radiation oncology nursing, and also served on the National Cancer Institute Task Force for development of Guidelines for Cancer Patient Education.
Ms. Sitton earned her master of science in nursing at the University of Texas School of Nursing at Houston. She has published extensively as an editor and contributing writer to oncology/radiology nursing textbooks and manuals, and has been a frequent speaker at the American Association of Cancer Education Conference annual meeting, and the Oncology Nursing Society, where she is an active member serving on a variety of committees.
Patricia C. Buchsel, RN, MSN, FAAN Clinical Specialist, Oncology, NexCura, a Thomson business
Patricia Buchsel is on the faculty of Seattle University College of Nursing and is a clinical instructor at the University of Washington School of Nursing in Seattle Washington. She is also a nurse educator in various clinical practice areas. She has been an oncology nurse for over 20 years including 11 years in various capacities at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle Washington.
She is also a consultant to numerous pharmaceutical companies for staff education and training. A prolific medical writer, Ms. Buchsel has edited five nursing textbooks, written over 35 articles, chapters and monographs and has served as co-editor, or editor of numerous oncology publications including The Pain Relief Report, a newsletter for oncology patients, The Oncology Report, and the Puget Sound Oncology Nursing Society Quarterly.
Ms. Buchsel earned her bachelor's degree from Seattle University and her master's degree at Seattle Pacific College both in Seattle, Washington and is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.
She is an active member of the American Nurses Association, the American Blood and Marrow Transplantation Society, the Washington State Nurses Association, the Oncology Nursing Society, the Puget Sound Oncology Nursing Society, the Sigma Theta Tau Honorary Society. She is also dean of the School of Nursing Advisory Board Seattle University, and a member of the board of governors at Seattle University, and serves on the advisory board for Cancer Lifeline.
Nationally recognized, Ms. Buchsel has received numerous honors including the Oncology Nursing Society award for Excellence of Scholarship and Consistency of Contribution to the Oncology Nursing Literature, the Connie Henke Yarbro Mentorship Award from the Oncology Nursing Foundation and was selected as the 1999 Outstanding Alumna of Seattle University.
Jormain Cady ARNP, MS, AOCN Clinical Specialist, Oncology, NexCura, a Thomson business
Jormain Cady is a nurse practitioner in radiation oncology at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Wash. She also has served as a pain management clinical nurse specialist and anesthesia clinical research coordinator, and has extensive experience in nursing care of head, neck and throat cancer patients. She is primarily responsible for assessment and management of patients actively undergoing radiation therapy, and also participates in post-treatment follow up care.
With 13 years oncology nursing experience, Ms. Cady has developed expertise in radiation oncology nursing and pain management. Her published works include articles and a book chapter on the topics of head and neck cancers and management of treatment effects, pain management, and cancer diagnosis and staging. She also serves as a reviewer for the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing and the Journal of Palliative Care. Additionally, she has presented for the Puget Sound Oncology Nursing Society and Washington State Medical Oncologists Society on cancer care issues.
Ms. Cady earned a BSN from the University of Washington in 1992, followed by a masters of science from the University of California at San Francisco in 1996, specializing in adult primary care and oncology nursing. She has also earned certification in advanced practice oncology nursing.
She currently serves as president of the Puget Sound Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society and is an active member of the national Oncology Nursing Society and the ONS Nurse Practitioner Special Interest Group. She also maintains membership with the Association of Pain Management Nurses, and the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology.
Martha Clay, MSN, ARNP Clinical Specialist, Oncology, NexCura, a Thomson business
Martha Clay's 22-year nursing career spans the healthcare spectrum from emergency, to respiratory medicine, thoracic surgery, nursing training, and risk assessment and surveillance.
Having completed her bachelor of science degree in 1983 and a master of science in nursing in 1989, Ms. Clay is a nurse practitioner currently licensed to practice in Washington state. Over the past five years, Ms. Clay has served as a breast specialist at the Polyclinic in Seattle and Overlake Medical Center in Bellevue, Wash. She currently is nurse practitioner at the Comprehensive Breast Center of the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle.
Prior to that, Ms. Clay served as nurse practitioner in vascular, chest, and general surgery at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, New York, NY. She implemented and facilitated efficient use of resources and services, diagnosis, patient education, and discharge planning that resulted in shortened hospital stays in the vascular, breast and general surgery clinics.
As nurse practitioner for a respiratory disease specialty clinic in New York, she set dosing regimens for the practice's allergy regimens, and initiated home management plans for pediatric and adult allergy and asthma patients. She also managed all acute reactions to allergy therapy during office hours.
Ms. Clay has also served one year in Suzhou, China, where she taught English to Chinese nursing students.
Joseph D. Tariman, RN, APN, ARPN-BC, OCN Staff nurse, Hematology-Oncology Unit at Evergreen Medical Center, Kirkland, Wash.; Predoctoral Research Fellow, Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems School of Nursing, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington
Joseph Tariman is a noted nurse practitioner, author, educator, and lecturer. He is currently a predoctoral research fellow in the Biobehavioral Nursing Research Program at the University of Washington, Seattle, where he received the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Service Award funded by the NIH, and the Achievement Rewards for College Scientists fellowship. Until 2006, he was a certified nurse practitioner with the Northwestern University Medical Faculty Foundation Multiple Myeloma Program in Chicago, Illinois.
Mr. Tariman's work in the area of multiple myeloma has been cited in numerous peer-review journals including Oncology Nursing Forum and Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing, for which he is a member of the editorial review board. He also serves as contributing editor for ONS Connect. He is recipient of numerous awards, from both national and international professional societies and is a frequent guest lecturer on a range of topics in the field of multiple myeloma.
Mr. Tariman received his master of arts in nursing from Cebu Doctor's University in the Philippines and was a clinical instructor in their School of Nursing. He continues to practice as a staff nurse at the hematology-oncology unit at Evergreen Medical Center in Kirkland, WA.
